The Canadian Pediatric AIDS Research Group brings together health care providers and researchers involved in pediatric and perinatal HIV in Canada, with the mandate of optimizing research, surveillance, clinical care, and prevention, of pediatric HIV infection in Canada.
Its origins date back to 1987, when, in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the Federal Center for AIDS created a “Working group on Pediatric HIV Infection”, to discuss what was then known of the clinical presentation, prognosis and epidemiology of HIV infection in children, and specifically regarding perinatal acquisition. Subsequent meetings of members of this group led in 1992 to the creation of the “Canadian Pediatric AIDS Research Group”. The objectives of the Group, its membership, and administrative processes including election of co-chairs and Steering Committee members were finalized in July 1996, with a group acronym (CPARG) and logo created.
CPARG regroups 36 physicians from across 16 clinical care centers in Canada, representing the centers of excellence for pediatric and perinatal HIV care. Members meet annually during the Canadian Association for HIV/AIDS Research (CAHR) conference, and through teleconference. Its members are responsible for provincial and national guidelines for pediatric and perinatal HIV Through its educational initiatives, research projects, and creation of best practices and guidelines, CPARG has become the primary pediatric HIV resource in Canada for clinicians, patients, and community members.
