Canadian Perinatal HIV Surveillance Program
• C P H S P •
The Canadian Perinatal HIV Surveillance Program (CPHSP) was initiated in 1990 under the auspices of the Canadian Pediatric AIDS Research Group (CPARG). CPARG is affiliated with the Canadian HIV Trials Network, which provides data management for the program. CPHSP is funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). >>
CPHSP OBJECTIVES
DATA COLLECTION
CPHSP collects data on two groups of children:
CPHSP data management and analysis is provided by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research-Canadian HIV Trials Network (CTN): http://www.hivnet.ubc.ca/
The CPHSP is the only database providing national data on perinatal HIV in Canada.
CPHSP MEMBERSHIP
CPHSP is coordinated by a steering committee with regional representation, that includes pediatric infectious disease specialists, epidemiologist, and obstetricians. The Steering Committee meets annually in person at the Canadian Association for HIV Research meeting and in between has teleconferences to discuss CPHSP related issues. The Research Ethics Boards of participating Centers have approved the program.
Current CPHSP members include:
Steering committee members:
Dr. Ari Bitnun, Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto (co-chair)
Dr. Laura Sauve, Oak Tree Clinic, BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre, Vancouver (co-chair)
Other committee members:
Dr. Ariane Alimenti, Oak Tree Clinic, BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre, Vancouver
Dr. Isabelle Boucoiran, Obst & Gyn, Hopital St. Justine, Montreal
Dr. Jason Brophy, Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Ottawa
Dr. Fatima Kakkar, Hopital St. Justine, Montreal (CPARG Chair)
Dr. Deborah Money, Oak Tree Clinic, BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre, Vancouver (Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada)
Dr. Joel Singer, CIHR – Clinical Trials Network, Vancouver

- To gather national surveillance data on perinatal HIV transmission, including interventions to prevent such transmission, in Centers across Canada for the purpose of informing health policy.
- To describe and understand population trends in the Canadian HIV epidemic as it pertains to HIV-infected mothers and their children.
- To determine the burden of perinatal exposure to HIV infection, the number of HIV-infected children living in Canada, and an estimation of vertical transmission rates and associated cofactors.
- To bring together clinicians and clinical researchers in Canada interested in perinatal HIV prevention, and enable research collaboration to improve HIV prevention efforts and advocacy.
DATA COLLECTION
CPHSP collects data on two groups of children:
- Infants born to HIV positive women in Canada: demographic, geographic and risk factor parameters of mother-infant pairs; the use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in pregnancy (proportion of HIV+ pregnant women receiving ART, type and duration of ART in mother and infant); the rate of mother-to-child HIV transmission; and infant outcomes (mortality).
- HIV Infected children receiving care at any participating site (whether born in Canada or abroad): Above information plus clinical status, immune status, transfer to adult care and mortality.
